Answer: Most of Europe holds that World War 2 began on September 1st 1939, with the German invasion of Poland. However, in Russia a different date is often used for the start of what they call ‘The Great Patriotic War’: June 22nd 1941, the date of the German invasion of Russia and Russian occupied territories like east Poland.
