The Guardian newspaper has published a blog called "The long history of Britain's distrust of MPs." Now, there's an obvious problem, in that the examples only go back to the end of the Second World War, so it's not very long at all (in fact it's very short), but I think the central point he's making stands: British people's current disdain for politicians isn't the result of new factors, it has been there for several generations at least, and some of the causes have remained the same. Now, this might seem obvious to people with an interest in history, but I think it bears mentioning.
