1837: Buckingham Palace is used as the British monarch's residence for the first time.
1870: The Ems Telegram, a conciliatory response to French requests from King Wilhelm of Prussia rewritten by Prussian Chancellor Bismarck to provoke France, is sent.
1871: The first recorded cat show, in London.
1878: The Treaty of Berlin reorganises former Ottoman lands in Eastern Europe.
1955: Britain's last execution of a woman; she is called Ruth Ellis.
