It was inevitable that Professor David I. Kertzer's book Unholy War - published in the U.S. as The Popes Against the Jews - would be controversial, simply because of the subject matter: an examination of the Vatican's role in the development and growth of modern anti-Semitism in Europe. Much of the criticism aimed at professor Kertzer has been unfounded, and his book is an important contribution to our understanding of modern European history.
